Overview
Recognize normal dental and maxillofacial anatomy, distinguish radiopaque from radiolucent structures, and flag findings that need dentist interpretation. RHS tests recognition and safe workflow—not independent diagnosis by the dental assistant.
Core Concepts
- Know common landmarks and expected appearances in the maxilla and mandible, including sinus areas, TMJ region, roots, lamina dura/PDL space, alveolar crest and edentulous anatomy.
- Recognize image patterns associated with caries, periodontal bone changes, periapical abnormalities, impacted/supernumerary teeth, implants and foreign objects.
- Radiopaque structures absorb more x-rays and appear lighter; radiolucent structures transmit more x-rays and appear darker.
Exam Tips
- Start with orientation and landmarks before searching for pathology.
- If the finding is unfamiliar, do not label a disease—communicate it to the dentist.
