Overview
Section 609 applies to the servicing and repair of motor vehicle air-conditioning (MVAC) systems. A person who repairs or services an MVAC for consideration—money, barter, or other compensation—must be trained and certified by an EPA-approved Section 609 program.
Core Concepts
- A technician who services or repairs an MVAC for payment or bartering must hold Section 609 certification from an EPA-approved program.
- Section 609 certification is required for compensated MVAC service regardless of which refrigerant is used in the system.
- A shop cannot substitute one certified employee for the certification requirement of another technician who actually performs covered service.
Exam Tips
- If the stem says passenger vehicle + paid/bartered A/C service, think Section 609 immediately.
- Ignore distractors based on voltage or refrigerant charge size.
