Question 1 of 18
A client has a detached garage on the same premises as a dwelling-policy residence. Explain how you would determine which part of the policy responds to a covered loss to that garage, and what facts could change the answer.
Strong Interview Answer
I would start with the dwelling form's definition of the residence premises and its Other Structures coverage. A qualifying detached garage is ordinarily handled under Coverage B rather than Coverage A, but I would still check the separate limit, exclusions, business-use restrictions, and any endorsements before promising coverage.
What to Listen For
- Coverage B — Other Structures
- separate limit
- policy definitions and exclusions
- business-use or endorsement issues
Caution
Do not state that every detached structure needs an endorsement or that every building on the premises is part of Coverage A.
