Overview
The phlebotomist controls much of the preanalytical phase: correct patient, correct specimen, correct device, correct tube, correct fill, and correct handling.
Core Concepts
- Role: obtain a correctly identified, high-quality specimen while protecting the patient, yourself, and specimen integrity; do not diagnose or interpret outside scope.
- Blood components: whole blood contains plasma plus formed elements; RBCs transport oxygen, WBCs support immune defense, and platelets participate in primary hemostasis.
- Serum is the liquid remaining after blood clots and therefore lacks fibrinogen consumed in clot formation; plasma is the liquid portion of anticoagulated blood and retains clotting factors.
Exam Tips
- When two answers both seem usable, choose the one that meets the order, patient condition, required additive, and fill volume with the least risk.
- For coagulation, immediately think: citrate + full tube + correct ratio.
