Overview
Concrete and masonry work combines struck-by, caught-in/between, fall, impalement, formwork-collapse, and material-handling hazards. For Outreach assessment purposes, focus on recognizing the hazard created by the operation and choosing the control that prevents worker exposure.
Core Concepts
- Guard protruding reinforcing steel onto or into which employees could fall so the impalement hazard is eliminated.
- Do not allow employees to work under concrete buckets while buckets are being elevated or lowered; route elevated buckets so workers are exposed as little as practical.
- Formwork must be designed, fabricated, erected, supported, braced, and maintained so it can support all reasonably anticipated vertical and lateral loads.
Exam Tips
- When a scenario contains protruding rebar, immediately check for impalement protection.
- For masonry walls, remember the two numbers most likely to matter: limited access zone = wall height + 4 feet; wall bracing trigger = more than 8 feet unless otherwise supported.
