AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate Beginner Guide

SAA-C03 validates architecture design judgment on AWS. The exam focuses on designing secure, resilient, high-performing, and cost-optimized architectures. It is not primarily an operations or incident-response certification. Expect scenario questions where you choose services and patterns based on tradeoffs such as availability, durability, latency, scalability, security, operational complexity, and cost.

AWS publishes four SAA-C03 domains and weights: Design Secure Architectures at 30%, Design Resilient Architectures at 26%, Design High-Performing Architectures at 24%, and Design Cost-Optimized Architectures at 20% of scored content. AWS also publishes the current exam format as 65 questions, either multiple choice or multiple response, with a 130-minute duration.

The exam uses AWS services as design tools. You should recognize where EC2, Lambda, ECS, EKS, S3, EBS, EFS, RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, ElastiCache, VPC, Route 53, CloudFront, Elastic Load Balancing, Auto Scaling, IAM, KMS, ACM, WAF, Shield, Organizations, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, SQS, SNS, EventBridge, Step Functions, API Gateway, Backup, and disaster recovery patterns fit architecturally.

AWS recommends at least one year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions that use AWS services. Candidates without AWS or IT experience may benefit from starting with AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, but SAA-C03 is not merely a foundational cloud vocabulary exam. It expects you to reason through architecture decisions and tradeoffs.

Start with the official exam guide, then study by architecture decision. Ask how to secure access, protect data, survive failure, scale under demand, reduce latency, choose storage and database options, connect networks, and control cost. Practice is most useful when you can explain why a service or design pattern is better than the distractor.
