EPA Section 608 Universal Exam Overview

Universal certification means the candidate has passed Core and all three equipment-type sections. It covers Section 608 knowledge for small appliances, high-pressure and very-high-pressure appliances, and low-pressure appliances. It does not prove broad HVAC/R job competence by itself.

Core knowledge includes environmental impact, ozone depletion, refrigerant categories, venting prohibition, technician responsibilities, recovery equipment, substitute refrigerants, refrigerant sales restrictions, safety, and basic regulatory terms. These ideas carry into every equipment-specific section.

Type I questions focus on small appliances and recovery during service or disposal. Type II questions focus on high-pressure and very-high-pressure appliances, recovery, evacuation, leak and charging practices, and appliance safety. Type III questions focus on low-pressure chillers, vacuum operation, purge units, air and moisture, and pressure-temperature reasoning.

A strong answer starts by classifying the scenario. Identify whether the appliance is small, high-pressure, very-high-pressure, or low-pressure. Then decide whether the issue is recovery, recycling, reclamation, leak reasoning, safe opening, disposal, or refrigerant handling.

Verify current testing and certification details with the EPA and the approved certifying organization before scheduling. Avoid planning around unofficial counts, timing claims, simulated-exam promises, or local practice-bank inventory.
