Overview
Part 107 foundation questions usually test who has authority, what counts as a small UAS, and when controlled-airspace authorization is required. The FAA favors answers that keep the Remote PIC responsible for the operation instead of shifting the decision to a client, observer, app, or property owner.
Core Concepts
- **Small UAS Definition (REG.01):** A small unmanned aircraft system includes the unmanned aircraft and associated elements needed for safe operation, such as communication links and control components. The exam may ask whether the system is more than just the flying aircraft.
- **Small Unmanned Aircraft Weight Limit (REG.02):** The small unmanned aircraft must weigh less than 55 pounds on takeoff, including payload and anything attached or carried. Do not count the pilot or off-aircraft controller in the takeoff weight.
- **Remote PIC Final Authority (REG.03):** The Remote PIC is directly responsible for the operation and has final authority. If a client wants the flight continued in unsafe or unauthorized conditions, the Remote PIC still owns the no-go decision.

- For weight questions, add payload and attachments before applying the under-55-pound rule.
