Overview
Parts of speech are best learned by function in a sentence, not by memorizing word lists. A single word can serve different grammatical roles in different contexts.
Core Concepts
- Noun: names a person, place, thing, or idea; common, proper, concrete, abstract, collective, and compound forms are all possible.
- Pronoun: substitutes for a noun or noun phrase; identify the antecedent and verify agreement and case.
- Verb: expresses action, occurrence, or state of being. Helping verbs combine with main verbs to form verb phrases.
Exam Tips
- Locate the verb first, then ask who/what performs or experiences it to find the subject.
- For adjective vs adverb questions, identify the word being modified—not the ending of the modifier.
