Overview
Loss adjustment is a fact-and-policy process: identify the contract, secure time-sensitive evidence, establish cause and damage, analyze liability or coverage, value the supported loss, and document the basis for the disposition.
Core Concepts
- Start with the named insured, policy period, covered location or risk, applicable coverage part, endorsements, limits, deductibles, and known reporting requirements.
- Preserve evidence before it disappears: photographs, damaged components, surveillance, witness information, estimates, maintenance records, police or fire reports, and relevant electronic records.
- Separate cause of loss from resulting damage. A covered event may produce damage that requires allocation when excluded deterioration, prior damage, or another cause also contributed.
Exam Tips
- When two facts conflict, prefer the answer that preserves and reconciles evidence rather than the one that assumes a conclusion.
- If the scope is disputed, resolve the scope before averaging estimates or arguing unit prices.
